Fully integrated POS system
During my Bachelor's thesis in Communications and Multimedia Design at the University of Applied Sciences in The Hague, I conducted research, conceptualized, designed, and tested a fully integrated POS system.
This comprehensive POS system aimed to cater to diverse target audiences. The motivation behind this project stemmed from conversations with store owners who expressed frustration with outdated POS systems.
These outdated systems led to various challenges, such as repetitive manual tasks that consumed valuable time and the absence of automated stock reordering capabilities.
To address these issues, I dedicated my thesis to developing an exceptional POS system that seamlessly integrates sales, stock management, personnel, and administration. My research question focused on achieving this integration within a user-friendly interface to enhance operational efficiency.
Over a span of 20 weeks, I followed a structured process involving interviews, benchmarking, heuristic evaluations, day-in-the-life observations, brainstorming sessions, and the creation of style tiles, logos, and sitemaps.

Initial idea and start of the project
The initial idea was to design a fully integrated POS system for stores of all sizes. A detailed plan was created to outline the project scope, deadlines, and expectations.
Start of research
Research began by conducting a benchmark analysis to identify existing solutions. Heuristic evaluations of SRS and Samesystem were performed to determine required functionalities.
UX tests, task models, and day in the life
UX tests were conducted with an employee from Number 9 stores. Task models were created to understand the sales flow. Day in the life studies were performed with store managers and supervisors to identify daily challenges.
Interviews, surveys, and conclusions
Interviews were conducted with individuals in retail, and a survey was distributed to gather more data. Design principles, user stories, personas, and recommendations were formulated based on the collected data.
Start of the design phase
Using the research findings, a brainstorming session was conducted to determine the best solution for the target audience. Concept variations were created, and after consultation with Number 9, a middle-sized concept was chosen. Styletile, logo, sitemap, and visual designs were then developed.
Testing and Completion of the design phase
Feedback was gathered from graphic designers and UX professionals for logo and visual design refinements. A prototype was created in Figma and subjected to heuristic evaluation and UX testing, confirming the system's effectiveness.
